Michelle Alexander

Background

Michelle Alexander is a law professor at Ohio State University. Previously, she was on the faculty at Stanford Law School where she served as director of the Civil Rights Clinic. Before entering academia, she served as the director of the Racial Justice Project for the ACLU of Northern California, leading a campaign known as DWB Campaign or Driving While Black and Brown Campaign. A graduate of Stanford Law School and Vanderbilt University, she clerked for Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun. In 2005, Alexander won a Soros Justice Fellowship, which supported the writing of The New Jim Crow. The New York Times best seller received rave reviews and won the NAACP Image Award in 2011. It examines how the mass incarceration of African American men, primarily through the war on drugs, has created a new racial under caste that is subject to legalized discrimination and social exclusion.
